Make Every Day America Recycles Day!

Do you only celebrate love on Valentine’s Day? Do you reserve honor for our veterans solely on Memorial Day and Veterans’ Day? Do you wait for Thanksgiving to count your blessings? Is the spirit of Easter and Christmas alive in your heart on those two days alone? Of course not! While we may be more actively expressive on those occasions, the significance and meaning associated with each celebration is woven into the fabric of our daily lives. America Recycles Day is no different.
Celebrated on November 15 each year, America Recycles Day is one day set aside to celebrate recycling in America. It represents one day when we can band together to schedule activities and events in our communities to jump start our friends and neighbors who haven’t already joined the recycling effort. It’s a time to establish and encourage eco-friendly habits that people can practice 365 days a year to make our world a better place.
America Recycles Day is gaining momentum with each passing year as more and more people realize something must be done to reduce waste in America and conserve our depleting resources. While Earth Day continues to capture the most limelight, America Recycles Day is becoming a serious contender. It’s a competition that benefits the environment and all of us who depend upon it!
When planning your green events for 2012, remember to include America Recycles Day in your promotions. Help build the hype all yearlong for an America Recycles Day spectacular—a cumulative celebration of your awareness campaigning! A BIG Thanks to all of Our Veterans!

At 110 years old, Florence Green is the last known living veteran of World War I. According to the Veterans’ Administration, only 1.7 million of the 16 million who served in World War II are still with us. If you’ve ever attended a military funeral, you know how moving the Honor Guard’s 3-volley salute is—the reverence and symbolism associated with the ritual can rouse tears to the eyes of even the most stoic. Wikipedia reports the custom originated from the European dynastic wars, where fighting ceased while the dead and wounded were removed from the field. Three shots were then fired to signal the battle could resume.
This Veteran’s Day, Target Marketing Group offers our sincere thanks to all the veterans, young and old, who have served our great nation. We remember those who sacrificed and continue to sacrifice all that they hold dear—their homes, their families, and even their lives—so that we can enjoy the benefits of a freedom we often take for granted.
With a patriotic spirit, we are proud to offer recycled-content products that are manufactured right here in the USA. With so many jobs and products being outsourced to foreign-based operations, we are pleased to continue offering a wide selection of “homemade” items that are tried and true under our canopy of red, white, and blue! In honor of our fallen veterans, we bow our heads. In honor of our veterans who have departed this world at their life’s end, we remember you. In honor of our veterans who continue to protect and serve our beloved country, we salute you. God bless America—the land of the free, and the home of the brave!

Use America Recycles Day to Tackle Tailgate Trash

For those of us in chillier parts of the country, Friday night football finds fans “huddling” on cold bleachers sipping hot chocolate to stay warm while we root for our favorite football teams.  The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency poses an even better challenge than going head-to-head with Jack Frost—they are back on track with their 2011 Game Day Challenge!

The Game Day Challenge is part of the EPA’s WasteWise program and is open to any college or university that has a football team.  The challenge is for the educational institution to select one home football night during the season to collect paper, cardboard, cans and bottles, while also collecting food for donation or composting.  In 2010, over 75 schools deflected 500,000 pounds of waste from  landfills.

Since America Recycles Day (ARD) is November 15, during the peak of football season, Keep America Beautiful  is providing tailgate toolkits for FREE to as many as 150 colleges or universities that sign up to participate.  The kits include incentive merchandise such as t-shirts, buttons, and banners with the ARD logo.  The kits also include information on how to organize a recycling collection activity.

While the Game Day Challenge only requires a recycling event to take place during one home football game, Target Marketing Group encourages colleges and universities to take the challenge to the next level by coordinating a recycling collection at EVERY home football game.  Recycling is a mindset and lifestyle choice that should not be thought of as a one-time effort.  With the combined efforts of campuses nationwide, the amount of waste that could be diverted from landfills is tremendous.  In addition, game attendees who might not currently be recyclers could have the chance to become educated on green practices that have a sustainable impact on the world in which we live.

Target Marketing Group coordinates the ARD store and can supply you with incentive materials to make your fall recycling events and ARD activities stand out.  For a chance to win FREE eco merchandise visit our ARD store, visit and sign up for your chance to win.

When the recycling results are tallied, we’ll all be shouting, Touchdown!

Make sure you are recycling at your event. This container is on sale through November 30, 2011.

Ecofriendly Tip: Recycling Your Kids’ Cell Phones

Rules, rules, rules!  If your kids just returned to school, you’re busy filling out forms and signing permission slips.  Included in the annual barrage of paperwork is a list of school rules—many which never applied to our own school days.  For instance, students are not permitted to have cell phones in the classroom.  Cell phones must be placed in lockers, or they are confiscated.  In our day, one only needed to avoid chewing gum, running in halls, and passing notes to fellow classmates.  Who passes notes these days when texting is more apropos?

In a generation when cell phones have become a youngster’s extra appendage, parents are pressured to keep their children equipped with the latest and greatest technological devices.  If you find yourself replacing cell phones frequently, it’s important you get the scoop on cell phone recycling.  The average North American changes cell phones every 18 to 24 months, creating 65,000 tons of e-waste from 125 million cell phones annually.  Since cell phones contain hazardous materials, it’s imperative they are disposed of properly.

Cell phone recycling is easy and convenient.  The EPA lists retailers on their website that accept cell phones for recycling.  Visit  http://www.epa.gov/osw/partnerships/plugin/cellphone/ to find the nearest provider.  Along with your cell phone, you can also drop off PDA’s, cell phone chargers, and cell phone batteries.  Just remember to cancel your cell phone service and erase the stored data before turning it in for recycling.   The EPA also relates this interesting statistic:  recycling one million cell phones saves enough energy to power more than 185 US households with electricity for one year.    Not only does recycling your cell phone eliminate hazardous e-waste, but it also conserves energy!

Cell phone collection sites can also be established in school s as district fundraisers.   In addition to cash incentives, many companies offer additional rewards, educational kits, and green curriculum ideas for teachers.  To browse the extensive list of available programs to select the one most suited for your school’s needs, do a simple Google search on “cell phone recycling fundraiser.”

Though it may not be worth your while unless you have a stockpile of old cell phones, you can earn cash for recycling your cell phones through select dealers.  Do another Google search on “cell phone recycling for cash,” and you will find sites where you can enter your cell phone model to learn how much you can earn.

What happens to cell phones when they are recycled?  Some cell phones are refurbished for resale.  Others are stripped of components, which are then used for new products.  Many cell phones are refurbished for use in developing countries to help bridge the digital divide.   Any component that is not reused in some way is safely and responsibly disposed of.

We live in a technologically advanced society and need to implement strategies to eliminate the mountains of e-waste we are creating.  It’s time we think of cell phones like we do our plastics, aluminum cans, and paper we place at the curb for recycling.  Think twice before tossing electronic devices into your regular garbage.

To encourage proper cell phone use and recycling in your schools or community, contact Target Marketing Group about our recycled tire PDA/cell phone holders, and distribute these environmentally sound incentives during your next event.  Check them out: http://www.recycledpromos.com/EcoProducts/tabid/573/ShowView/2/owner/902001/number/317/Default.aspx

America Recycles Day – What Better Time to Organize a Recycling Program?

America Recycles Day Merchandise

Summer is winding down, and kids are heading back to school.  Educators are still swimming though—swimming through legions of lesson plans, memos, meetings, classroom decorating, student profiles, and new computer software that’s supposed to make life easier.  With the pressure to leave “no child left behind,” preparing for state testing, and aspiring to earn high marks on district state report cards, recycling might not be at the forefront of a teacher’s mind.  Regardless, many schools are going green because they recognize our children need a healthy world to work and function in as adults.

It’s easy to start a school recycling program.  The Go Green Initiative is the premier source in lighting the path.  Visit their website at   http://www.gogreeninitiative.org to receive step-by-step instructions and essential tools for implementing a recycling program tailor-made for your school’s needs.

Make recycling a reason to celebrate at your school!  Many teachers wait until spring to plan special activities around Earth Day on April 22.  While Earth Day is widely recognized and the culmination of group efforts to keep our planet safe, clean, and healthy, many students have already “checked out” by then and may not retain the importance of the message.  Start earlier in the school year by celebrating America Recycles Day on November 15.  Initiated in 1997, America Recycles Day doesn’t address all components of environmental stewardship—the importance of recycling is its specifically targeted goal.  Since America Recycles Day is more than 2 ½ months away, educators have ample time to organize lesson plans and events to kick-off the celebration.  Since America Recycles Day is a subsidiary program of Keep America Beautiful, you can visit their website for ideas and to download a toolkit at http://www.kab.org/site/PageServer?pagename=ARD_Homepage

If your budget allows for the distribution of promotional products for your event, Target Marketing Group is the exclusive vendor of America Recycles Day materials http://recycledpromos.com/AmericaRecyclesDayMerchandise.aspx .  Our products imprinted with the America Recycles Day logo include T-shirts, stickers, tattoos, buttons, pencils, sports bottles, and calendar magnets.  You aren’t restricted to purchasing only items containing the America Recycles Day logo.  We offer a host of recycled-content materials perfect for your students, such as rulers, coloring books, floral seeded or circuit board bookmarks, crayons, pencil boxes, tote bags,  and a large variety of writing instruments www.recycledpromos.com .

America Recycles Day on November 15 is the key time to organize a recycling program in your school and to train and equip students with the knowledge they need to conserve our natural resources for a lifetime.  The sooner you start shaping student behaviors with environmental programs like this one, the better the chance recycling will become an unconscious habit they will practice through adulthood.  Reading, writing, and arithmetic have the prominent place in school curriculum, but leave a little wiggle room for going green to do your part to make the world a better place to live, work, and play.
